Missing the Point

Washington’s current focus on “the wall” is a painstaking example of how partisan- (and presidential ego-) politics blinds our government to the reality of our country’s needs.  Urgency is not importance.  In the past, great things could get done in government when the entire nation was at attention.  Well Washington, you have our attention, but your obsession with nonsense is missing an opportunity.

No wall will solve America’s immigration issues.  Kudos to Trump for elevating the issue, but shame on him and Congress for degrading the debate into worthless symbols of ego and pain.  Although it is difficult to tell how ineffective our current immigration laws are since they are so poorly enforced, it is probably time for an update since the world has changed so much.  An effective government would knuckle down and really tackle this issue now that everyone is paying attention.  It’s time for a “family meeting.”  As most economists will tell you, America needs immigration.  But what is the right balance between satisfying that need, being fair to our citizens, and being compassionate to those who wish to escape cruelty?  That is a difficult question to answer, but no wall will answer it.  As will it not answer what to do about immigrants improperly in this country, recognizing that it is hopeless to expect we can (or should) make them leave.  As will it not prevent drug importation.  As will it not limit any other criminal activity.

But look at what we argue about – what number is compromisable around $5.7 Billion; whether to declare a national emergency; who is more intent on border security?  None of these arguments address reality.  As for the $5.7 Billion; have we forgotten the total price tag we were told?  This round is simply chumming the waters– once the hook is set, we’ll be more inclined to finish the job (a typical defense contractor tactic).

What does have hope of answering the complex questions of immigration is vigorous debate among many smart people.  That is supposed to be Congress’ role.  That is what would make America great again.  Not some tantrum by a narcissist who wants to build his own monument and Congressional debate about $5 Billion and politicking about people out of work .  When Rome no longer kept its eye on the ball we got the Dark Ages.
