The far right keeps saying they will lose their freedoms when the Dems take charge. What freedoms are they concerned about? Is this code for racism – does losing white privilege mean “losing freedom”? Certainly, Second Amendment “freedoms” are also on their list. But in a country with more guns than people and the “freedom” to walk up to a government Capitol with military automatic weapons, doesn’t anyone in control have a duty to question if the Second Amendment has gone too far? After January 6, has the far right demonstrated that they can be trusted with military weapons?
It is unclear what other freedoms the right is talking about. Biden’s agenda includes health care, climate change, immigration, inequality, and of course the pandemic. Although there may be policy differences related to his approach, do any of these things threaten freedoms? In the long run, some are likely to improve freedoms. Difficult foreign policy issues about China, Korea, and the Middle East pose serious challenges, but do any of those threaten American freedoms (as long as we’re not invaded)?
This fear of losing freedom is left over from Trump’s big lie that Dems equal socialism. Of course, the far right should question their own distaste of socialism if any of them use food stamps, unemployment insurance, agricultural subsidies, or depend on a minimum wage. Needless fear; just another example of the needless damage to American society from Trump’s lies. Put on your mask and take a civics lesson.
